The firm

Lewis Silkin works with leading businesses to protect and enhance their most important assets - their ideas, their people, their brand and their future. We call it: Ideas. People. Possibilities.

With offices in London, Oxford, Manchester, Leeds, Cardiff, Belfast, Dublin and Hong Kong, we are recognised by clients and industry alike as being distinct for our unique culture, market-leading practice areas, sector focused approach and for providing solutions to complex, multijurisdictional business challenges, with a pragmatic and human touch. We have two things at our core: people — both ours and our clients’— and a focus on creative, tech and innovative businesses.

Our culture is encapsulated by an ethos of bravery and kindness, guided by our values of Integrity, Clarity, Unity and Excellence (our ‘I-CUE’). We aim to provide a supportive environment for our people, clients and wider community and embrace diversity & inclusion, ensuring people are able to bring their full selves to work.

The department

Consistently top-ranked amongst our peers for over two decades, we advise UK and multinational clients of all sizes, with most of our Partners independently rated as leaders in the field. Not only do we have the largest employment team in the UK, we have truly global reach as members of Ius Laboris, the world’s leading employment law alliance, and with our Asia Pacific base in Hong Kong and our Dublin offices.

We are setting up a specialist Litigation Hub within our Employment Legal Practice Group to specialise in running high volume Employment Tribunal cases almost exclusively for Respondents. The Litigation Assistant will be dedicated to the Litigation Hub and can be based from any of our office locations.

Responsibilities

The Litigation Assistant will work exclusively on Employment Tribunal matters for the Litigation Hub. The Litigation Assistant will assist more senior associates and partners with their cases, as well as running their own matters under supervision throughout the lifecycle of a claim. The caseload will consist of contentious Employment Tribunal work, typically on higher volume matters, and the Litigation Assistant will have regular direct contact with clients.

The role will develop in accordance with the Litigation Assistant’s own skills and aptitude and the needs of clients and the Litigation Hub. There will be opportunities for career progression within the Litigation Hub, which will be separate from the career path that applies to the wider Employment Legal Practice Group.

The successful candidate will have a minimum of three to four years’ experience of handling Employment Tribunal matters. The candidate does not need to be qualified, but must have experience of all aspects of the Tribunal litigation process, including:

  • Drafting merits assessments
  • Instructing and engaging with counsel
  • Preparing ET3s and Grounds of Resistance
  • Drafting applications, orders and lists of issues
  • Disclosure
  • Proofing witnesses and drafting witness statements
  • Preparing bundles
  • Any other preparation for hearings as required

The candidate must have experience handling a busy caseload with sometimes competing deadlines, a strong analytical ability, and a clear communication style (both spoken and written). They must be pro-active and able to anticipate upcoming needs, have a commercial approach to client service and must be a team player.

The candidate must be willing to travel across the UK to attend hearings in person as and when required.
